With a bit of tender loving care from the inhabitants, water-based vegetables like cabbage, carrots and potatoes will easily grow in this climate. This gives them a chance to improve their agricultural skills and more people are able to live self-sufficiently. In addition, any harvest items not needed for their own consumption can be sold at the market for additional income.

Your contribution will help the children of Baraka improve their educational opportunities, e.g. with new schoolbooks, desks, chairs, pencils and the like. It’s easier to learn subjects such as reading, writing and math with the proper equipment.
A teacher can better help students learn with books or the support of a chalkboard. Visual aids make lessons more vivid and learning more fun for the children. Most of these children only know the slums; help them learn that there is a whole world outside. Children are the best hope for the future, let’s prepare them for it.

The harsh slum life has forced the children of Baraka to grow up too soon, but kids should be allowed to be kids. They are already happy, but they will be happier playing with dolls, plush toys, jump ropes and a lot of other things that will make them smile brighter. More importantly, playing has an immense impact on infant development and learning – especially on their motor skills and intellect.
The newly established kindergarten will also be equipped with balls, puzzles etc. to encourage the kids to play together teaching them valuable social skills for their adult lives. Educational toys would also be helpful in preparing them for their future lessons at school.

This donation will help Baraka’s residents to construct a playground and sports complex that can be used by the people of Baraka and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Baraka and its inhabitants can enjoy their new positive reputation and acknowledgement from outside of the community. People in other districts can also benefit from this new meeting point resulting in a feeling of unity between districts.

Wood is the central building material for inhabitants, but is quite scarce. Due to the continual urbanization in Senegal, forests have greatly decreased in the last decades.
The Senegalese must import teak and acacia from well-wooded areas in Central Africa at very expensive prices.
With your donation, residents can buy wood and build household and garden items themselves, e.g. beds, baby cribs, fences for their gardens and much more. This material will help them equip and decorate their newly built houses and make them much more comfortable. They can also sell hand-made products to earn a living.

For example, sewing courses are offered at the educational center and sewing machines give them the chance to make clothes for themselves or to sell at the market. With the new power supply and basic equipment, they could establish a small business. This will allow them to earn money for their family and respect within the city.

Technology can be a valuable teaching tool, which is why it is also planned to equip both the education center and school with computers. As a first step, a professional blogger is currently teaching 3 youths of Baraka about blogging and journalistic work.
These people will be the first to report on daily life and progress in Baraka. It is something they can be proud of because they will have learned a profession and they will become role models for others learning modern communication skills in Baraka.

This is because the number of children and youths makes up nearly 50% of all inhabitants. By contributing to school enlargement, you help guarantee a basic school education for every child. Learning will never stop with the four new classrooms and library. In addition, a computer lab with internet is planned so that they can learn how to sensibly use these tools for education and communication. Further education for teachers will lead to a more substantiated education for the children.

Poor hygiene is a critical issue in Baraka resulting in unsanitary conditions and widespread illness, all of which affect the life expectancy of residents.

These bathrooms will be connected to the new water and plumbing systems, which will have already been established as one of the first parts of the project. The construction of these facilities will promote both the awareness and practice of hygienic behaviors. This is a major step forward to improve the standard of living in New Baraka.

Residents of the Baraka slum must currently travel a long way to the next pharmacy or doctor. Join us in providing basic medical treatment for New Baraka by enlarging the tiny hospital ward with the help of the residents themselves. Naturally, a bigger medical station calls for more staff, which is why on-site medical training for new staff members is planned. Help us build, equip and staff these medical facilities to provide new Baraka with general medical care and a station for medical emergencies or acute illnesses.

The shanties will be gradually replaced until everyone has a solid home able to withstand the extreme weather conditions, e.g. dust during droughts and heavy rain in the rainy season.
Your contributions will aid the people of Baraka in erecting new modular homes with modern commodities, e.g. electricity, running water, plumbing and a waste water system. By paying micro rent payments, the houses will eventually become property of the citizens. This means a major step towards independence and privacy.
